About the event
"I Am Not a ‘Good White Woman’: The Oppressive Truths in Sport and Society"
2020 APA Heyman Lecture
Through her narrative she communicates how even the most committed White individual can never be a ‘good White person’ when it comes to one’s racial education and work (Sullivan, 2014). However, awakening to and unlearning one’s unconscious and oppressive ways of being is a necessary lifelong personal and professional journey. Attendees will be encouraged to consider the possibilities of cultural broaching, sharing one’s own intersectional identities (Crenshaw, 1989) and listening to, inviting in and making space for athletes, sport stakeholders and colleagues of non-dominant identities to not only exist but thrive. The presenter concludes with a call to disrupt all forms of internal, relational and systemic oppression.
